WASHINGTON, D. C. (AP) — A new company-sponsored study shows the drug Zovirax — approved for a treatment for people with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infections — could have a life-saving effect in a serious condition called shingles.
The study published Monday by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the first time a drug has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for a treatment for shingles, the most common form of the herpes simplex virus.
"This study shows a potential benefit for patients who have HSV-2," said Dr. Bower, an assistant professor of surgery and immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In the study, the researchers tested the drug for the treatment of shingles, the painful form of the herpes simplex virus that causes herpes. The drugs were designed to target the virus, which causes shingles in adults and kids as young as 13.
The drug works by inhibiting the virus's ability to replicate, which can cause the disease.
But it's also used to treat other types of shingles, including genital herpes and cold sores.
The drugs are used to treat people who have an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus, which causes the most common form of the virus. The herpes simplex virus, which causes the most severe form of the virus, usually causes shingles in the first signs of the outbreak.
